Course Introduction

Freudian psychoanalysis is the grandparent of all western psychotherapeutic methods. Freud has been a controversial figure not just in the west but in the Islamic world. His emphasis on sexual and aggressive drives as the motivational basis for behaviour, the deterministic and naturalistic assumptions of the model, and the direct attacks he made on religion in some of his writings all contribute to the controversy. However, Freud is also very much celebrated in the west and the Muslim world. And his psychoanalysis has been developed into some of the contemporary psychodynamic psychotherapies schools. In the Muslim world, Prof Malik Badri, among other prominent writers, has been a vociferous critique of western psychology and in particular Freudian psychoanalysis, while others have accepted Feud’s philosophy wholeheartedly.

This course will introduce to the participant the philosophical assumptions, view of human nature, model of personality, model of health and abnormality, model of psychotherapy and psychoanalytic therapy techniques Freudian practioners espouse with an analysis and appraisal from the Islamic ontological and epistemic framework. The course will cover a number of case studies from the tutor and there will be ample opportunity for participants to ask questions and also present their case studies for Islamic supervision.
